Dentures replace missing teeth; they can be removed for cleaning and then replaced. It takes some time to become accustomed to wearing a denture and although they will never be as comfortable as natural teeth or a tooth implant, the dentures available today are far better and far more comfortable than they were in the not too distant past.
There are two different types of dentures; full and partial. A full denture is used when all your teeth have been removed while a partial denture is used when there are still teeth in the dental arch. Upper dentures rest on the gums and cover the entire palate, lower dentures rest only on the gums, thus providing room for your tongue.
Two types of full dentures:
There are two types of full dentures in common use, your dentist will describe the differences and suggest which of the two types are best suited to you.
- Conventional: A conventional full denture is not placed in your mouth until all tissues that were damaged during extraction have healed properly. This can take several weeks and during this time you will be without teeth.
- Immediate: This denture is placed on the same day as your teeth are extracted. The denture is made in advance from impressions and measurements taken by the dentist. Immediate dentures in Downers Grove are advantageous as you will never be without teeth. As the geometry of the mouth changes once the natural teeth have been extracted, it is necessary to have immediate dentures relined after a few months.
Your dentures will feel awkward for a few weeks after they have been placed. It may prove difficult to eat and speak properly but these minor difficulties are quickly overcome. It will also take a little time for you to learn exactly how to keep them on place.
Tips:
- Never let your dentures dry out, if they are not in your mouth place them in water.
- Before wearing your denture brush your gums and palate to remove any debris.
- If you have any problems with your dentures, do not hesitate to see your dentist.
It is recommended that you remove your dentures at night; this allows your gums and mouth an opportunity to rest. This is an ideal time for your denture to soak in a cleaner so they are always fresh and sparkling clean.
